description From the campaign of the Provinciales (1656-1657), Pierre Nicole was the most stubborn representative of the small number of the Jansenists who considered that it was necessary to them to give evidence their conformity with the pure thomisme in materia gratiæ et prædestinationis. Thus they hoped to protect themselves from the charge of heresy. Imperceptibly, Nicole was convinced by the theses of Thomas's school, even going as far as defending so called molinist propositions according the opinion of the defenders of Jansénius. This was the origin of the conflict with Antoine Arnauld near 1690 about the idea of a general common grace.
