Description
Summary:The article presents the results of a study of the audience of contemporary visual art in Tyumen. 25 semi-structured interviews served as the material. The respondents were visitors to the exhibition grounds of contemporary art. When analyzing the interviews, the authors relied on the socio-philosophical concepts of cultural capital by P. Bourdieu and L. Hanquinet, as well as the concept of cultural profile as a combination of cultural, creative, and leisure preferences and activities in relation to various forms of art. As a result, four cultural profiles of the audience were identified: "professionals", "amateurs", "adventurers", and "those who are on trend". These profiles demonstrate the difference in leisure strategies, contexts of understanding contemporary art, and ideas about its specifics. They also reveal correlations with age, gender characteristics, employment, and education. But at the same time, exhibition visitors are interested not only in the content of the event but also in its status. Such leisure strategies are relevant both for institutionalized and noninstitutionalized spaces of contemporary art localization in Tyumen. However, more often than not, the places of popularization and promotion of contemporary art in the city are not museums, but art spaces, primarily because of their friendly atmosphere and developed infrastructure. It is concluded that a layer of the public appears in Tyumen, ready for the perception of contemporary art. This is of particular importance both for the development of creative practices in the city and for the transformation of urban public spaces.
