description Ethnic conflicts and ethnic violence are one of the leading causes of economic and human losses in wars over the last few decades. Ethnic conflicts are not a phenomenon of a newer date, such conflicts have taken place all over the world for centuries, but after the Cold War, the events in Rwanda, the disintegration of the former Soviet Union has become the subject of numerous theoretical and empirical research. The results of the research found that there is no single cause, but that ethnic conflicts are the result of a combination of different factors: political mobilization, inequality, ethnic identity, international interventions. Among the many factors that have the role of the originator of ethnic conflicts, a considerable part of the literature is devoted to the influence of the political and economic dimension of intergroup inequalities. Therefore, in this paper, we will try to present the main insights of theoretical main reflection and the findings of empirical studies on the correlation between the political and economic dimension of intergroup inequalities and ethnic conflicts. Multidimensional intergroup inequalities, in interaction with other factors, can significantly increase the risk of outbreaks of ethnic conflicts. However, we can not speak of a simple causal relationship, nor that the intergroup inequalities are the key cause of ethnic conflicts, but when considering these two complex social phenomena, a number of contextual factors need to be taken into account.
