description | The comedy generally known as Les amours du vieillard is only known to us thanks to Dom Louis Le Pelletier (1663-1733), his Dictionnaire de La Langue Bretonne published in 1752, and the manuscript of the latter, much more copious than the printed dictionary, which was discovered by Francis Gourvil in 1924 at the Château de Keromnès in Locquénolé. The Breton title is Amouroustet eun den coz pêvar huguent bloaz Pehini so orguet à vez eur plac’h jaoanc hen oad a c’huezecq bloaz etc. (« The loves of an eighty-year-old man, who is in love with a sixteen-year-old girl etc. »). Le Pelletier warns from the outset: « This libretto printed in Morlaix in the year 1647 is burlesque and not without a few obcenities which I will not transcribe when I know them ». |
