description | Objectives:To analyze the lymph nodes in various neck dissections based on pathological analysis.Material and Method:The neck specimens of 86 patients who underwent neck dissection for head and neck malignancies in the last 10 years were reviewed retrospectively. The number of lymph nodes documented by pathologic microscopic examinations was recorded. The neck dissection technique and the number of lymph nodes removed were compared.Results:101 neck spesimens of 86 patients were reviewed (15 cases had bilateral neck dissection). The patients were grouped according to the non-lymphatic structures preserved during neck dissection. 50 radical neck dissections (Group 1), 28 modified radical neck dissections sparing the eleventh cranial nerve (Group 2), 13 functional neck dissections sparing the eleventh cranial nerve, internal jugular vein and sternocleoidomastoid muscle (Group 3) were documented. The remaining 10 cases had other modifications of neck dissections. Conclusion:The number of lymph nodes in the neck specimens decreases as the number of non- lymphatic structures preserved during neck dissection increases. |
