Description
Summary:We compared the throat culture results with thase of the rapid test, based on the sandwich immunoassay developed to detect the group A streptococcus antigen in throat. Two swabs were taken from 174 patients; one for culture and the other for rapid antigen detection test. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for antigen detection test were calculated according to the culture. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of the antigen screening test used in our laboratory were 78%, 99%, 97% and 92% respectively. We observed that, sensitivity of the antigen screening test was lower than it’s specificity. Thus throat specimens with negative screening test should be confirmed with culture.
