description | This paper examines the corporeal modus operandi, artefacts and prohibitions that surrounded rulers at the apogee of the Inca Empire. These pragmatic and symbolic devices displayed the sovereigns’ physiological singularity as a demonstration of their formidable abilities. The system of representations upon which rested these practices stemmed from local perceptions about the reproduction of human collectives. At once actors and means for this reproduction, the founding ancestors animated the living and depended on them to fulfil their physiological needs – to be fed and to protect their bodily integrity. The symbolic devices that surrounded the ruler’s person drew from this ‘imaginary’ in order to reify royal power, to materialise the imperceptible and to ultimately legitimise the State. |
