description | We go back over the analyses of the pragmatic-discursive function of the left dislocation of the subject in French, those that highlight the theming function and those that add a focusing function by postulating for the dislocated subject a status of focused theme. We retain the notion of focusing to explain the purpose of such a structure in the discourse, considering however that the subject is not the only one to benefit from focusing in this case, but that the focusing of the predicate itself is thus strengthened, which ultimately results in focusing the entire clause. To support this hypothesis, we articulate the left dislocation of the subject with other syntactic means involved in the phenomenon of focusing, then we extend the analysis to the case of the left dislocation of a complement. |
