description During a survey made in January and February 2000 in order to define the limits of the stele region of southern Ethiopia, hypogeum were discovered in quarry face north of Assela, east of Lake Zway. Some human bones and ceramic shards had been collected by the heritage services of the city. The pottery shows evident connections with that found in sites and monuments of the mountains of Harar dated to between the 8th and 12th centuries AD. This presentation of the site provides also the opportunity to review protohistoric studies in this region of Africa.
