description
This essay will discuss Gilberto Freyre's notions about the “luso-tropical civilization” and the “mixed blood”, connecting them to the current public debate in Brazil about racial identity and the statement of the suburbs inhabitants against the social differences and the historical process of discrimination. Such themes will be developed in the Brazilian novel in the urban violence entanglements, produced since the 70's, as well as in the recent movement self-described at “marginal literature”. Finally, the text will investigate one of the last work of the Angolan writer Agualusa, as an emblem of a specific lineage of the Brazilian thought, which forecasts the “quadroon” as a political horizon.
