| description | This article deals with the political behavior of the Piauían elite in the face of the Brazilian independence process. The Piauí lords, although updated on the debates about the Enlightenment ideology, but conscious of the inevitable implantation of a new political order in Brazil, adopted a pragmatic attitude towards the events. They continued the struggle undertaken since the 18th century for the control of local power. The separation between Brazil and Portugal and the formation of the Brazilian State were an argument and political space of this struggle, which at the moment was characterized by the rupture of the pact of coexistence between the hegemonic groups. |
