description The paper deals with the basic forms of computer crime with the focus on identity theft as a special form that implies illegal collection of confidential personal data for the purpose of subsequently committing more criminal offenses. The paper presents basic methods and techniques of personality data stealing from Internet end users, from personal computers and large databases, and the use of stolen data for criminal reasons. On the basis of available data, the paper shows tendencies of an increase in numbers and forms of high-tech crime and identity theft at the national and global levels. It also discusses possible development of new methods and techniques for identity theft and upgrading of the existing ones, and the consequences of their use for committing criminal offenses.
