Summary:This special issue focuses on a conflict between emphasizing nuances and complexity in professional work research and a systematic scientific presentation. The article presents the argument that such a conflict can appear in research collaborations dominated by diverse perceptions of validity and of what count as valid knowledge and interpretation of a given phenomenon. Based on a presentation of a backward-mapping scientific analysis of professional work, the article discusses pros and cons of integrating professional complexity with scientific criteria for valid and reliable analyses.
