| Summary: | René Maran was 58 years old in 1945 when Unesco, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, was created. This specialized agency of the United Nations, based in Paris, intended from its creation to contribute to world peace by promoting dialogue between cultures and international intellectual cooperation. A former administrator in Africa, and author of fifteen books at that time, René Maran could have been associated with it, given that the new organization wanted to count on the participation of intellectuals and artists from all over the world, and from different cultures and continents. However, he was not, neither in 1945 nor in the following years, although he lived until 1960, period of the golden age of Unesco. This article examines the reasons for this absence, and analyzes Unesco’s actions in favor of literature and culture, particularly in the Caribbean. |
