Summary:Pursuing professional development in special collections is hard for a paraprofessional, especially when many library schools offer limited instruction in special collections and inadequately prepare students for a professional position. When the "traditional" resources are underwhelming, it is important to know where to seek out knowledge, training, and professional connections. In this column, I explore my path in the field of rare books libraries, and offer advice for others who may be struggling to figure out their own path.
