description | Mine waste dumps are a major source of pollution in coal mining areas. They often are associated with spontaneous combustion of waste heaps, emissions of harmful gases and dust into the atmospheres nearby towns and villages, and water and soil pollution. Mine waste dumps have existed for decades, but the problem of their disposal may be solved if we consider them a source of valuable raw materials and energy. Every waste dump is unique in its composition and properties, and must be treated as such. Assessment of the feasibility of recycling and use, testing, detailed studies, and collecting information for analysis of all available data is necessary. In many of these waste dumps, previous laboratory and analytical studies have shown a high contents of germanium, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, and in some the presence of samples of gold and silver. The presence of these elements suggests the processes of natural enrichment due to physical and chemical changes in the mine waste dumps. t is suggested and recommended that constant monitoring of existing stockpiles of coal mines and territories abandoned dumps should be developed. This should be based on an analysis of all available data, and done for the integrated use of rock dumps, reclamation of freed space, and implementation of measures to protect the environment. |
