description Parallel to the arrival and spread of new trends of thought among the Basque elites in the 18th century, reticent attitudes, sometimes bordering on hostile, developed towards them. The institutionalization of the enlightenment in the Basque country took place with the creation of the «Basque Royal Society for Friends of the country». The analysis of the dominant trends of thought in this Society serves as an observatory of a larger process, to wit the formation of anti-modern thought in the Basque country. this article presents an attempt to analyse this process based on the experiences of the social actors involved, taking into account both the exogenous and the endogenous factors that led to this phenomenon. An attempt is thus made to reconcile the study of its relational networks, the historical context in which they developed and the discourses that emerged from them. The Jesuit element appears repeatedly, although in different forms and registers, as a reference of the products of these discourses.
