description | Just as most of the African countries, the number of Chinese people present in Algeria increased significantly in the 2000’s. There’re two types of Chinese citizen in Algeria: the construction worker and the merchant. While the first one is under the supervision of the Chinese building companies, the second one comes from a classical migration and is noticed by the appearance of the first Chinese district in Algiers. In a country known for its emigration, the Chinese immigration brings a new otherness that rises up new interrogations concerning the relationship with the Other and highlight by all the myth and the urban legends towards the “Chinese”. Based on a survey that we conducted in 2013 on the Chinese migrants in Algiers, we analyze in this article the territorial dimensions of the Chinese settlement in the local scale. Our results highlight how the Chinese migrants set up a marketplace in Algiers, and also question the position of Algiers in the geography of the international Chinese migrations. |
