Fantastic stories stand somewhere between mysterious and strange stories. In other words, the reader can describe the situation in two different ways: either logically based in natural rules, or metaphysically –that goes beyond the natural rules.
In Western Europe, the 19th century was the glorious period of fantastic short stories. In the first mid of the century the dream and the attraction of romanticism was the cause of this. In the middle and the end of this century the tendency to the scientific thinking and positivism and also the questions that the scientific progress wasn’t able to answer, led authors to write fantastic short stories.
In 20th century, this kind of stories became more mature because of the scientific progress and also the more advanced view of human being to his environment. It was when this kind of story merged by the other kind of short stories and a new genre was created; that was the combination of several different ones.
One of the most popular combinations of genres in this century was the fantastic science fiction. Two other kinds of short stories-that were created and were embraced enthusiastically –are the phantasmic fantastic short stories and the philosophical fantastic ones. In fact, the creation of these genres was an effort to find answer for puzzlement caused by excessive influence of material world- a world without dreams- on human beings. This article was developed to study evolution of short stories in this period and causes of this evolution. |
