description The importance of Livr el labourer by Joachim Guillôme (1797-1857) in the history of Breton literature and language is still underestimated. At a time when the claim to full status for a language still had to be based on literary examples, this long poem had a double effect : on the one hand, to illustrate Breton in general as a poetic language capable of equalling a classical model ; on the other hand, to illustrate in particular the Vannetais dialect, which had until then been despised by Le Gonidec’s intellectual heirs. Its potential audience was thus limited to a few hundred educated priests and landowners. This is why Jean-Marie Le Frapper interests us as the only identified representative of the chosen public that Guillôme was aiming at.
