description | Ireland had a late access to film production due to its colonial past. Numerous English-speaking filmmakers from the US and the UK seized the opportunity to shoot the lavish landscapes of the island to the despair of indigenous artists who felt deprived of such opportunities. A change occurred in the 1990’s with the Oscar winning Irish films My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989) and The Crying Game (Neil Jordan, 1992). The rapid economic growth that followed has allowed Ireland to become a great place to produce films in the early twenty-first century. The year 2016 was not only the celebration of the centenary of the war of independence in Ireland. It also saw the box office successes of Irish-Canadian Room (Lenny Abrahamson), Brooklyn (John Crowley), The Lobster (Yórgos Lánthimos) shot in Ireland and produced by Element Pictures, and of low-budget local films such as Sing Street (John Carney), The Young Offenders (Peter Foott). This article aims at analyzing the reasons of such changes and it seeks to show how a small English-speaking country with a strong cultural identity has reached a strategic position within Europe as well as between Europe and the United States. |
