Description
Summary:There are many works in the political thought that analyse the notion of promise. In Zur Genealogie der Moral, Nietzsche affirms that the promise provides a memory of the will, faculty that introduces a change in the temporality because who promises defines the future in the present. Arendt takes this definition in The Human Condition in order to characterize the potentialities of the action, maintaining that the promise establishes islands of certainty in a field of unpredictable nature. This paper aims to reconstruct correspondences and discontinuities in both perspectives. In order to achieve that goal, the relationship of the promise with sovereignty and responsibility will be considered.
