Studies on the effect of fertilizer on wheat were carried out in 38 farmers' fields in the Mugamba area during the 1984 and 1985 second crop growing seasons using the cultivar Romany. Application of 30 units/ha of Kdid not give a significant difference in the yield. When 40-40 units/ha of N and P respectively were applied, there was a significant increase in the yield due to N in hygrokaolisols and brown soils and to P in humiferous kaolisols. This fertilizer gave better returns in hygrokaolisols and brown soils than in humiferous kaolisols. It increased the yield by increasing the number of kernels/spike. Its efficiency on plant growth (weight of straw/ha and plant height), on yield and on two yield components (number of kernels/spike and weight of 1000 kernels) decreased as the soil fertility increased. In hygrokaolisols and brown soils, the yield increase due to application of the fertilizer 40-40 units NP/ha was estimated at 39 % and 16 % o where as the yield without fertilizer was 1300 kg/ha and 2000 kg/ha, respectively. |
