description | Background: Hemodialysis patients are at risk for infection with hepatitis B virus; so, hepatitis B vaccination is critical in these patients. Different methods are used to improve immunity of hemodialysis patients with different and controversial results. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of hepatitis B vaccination by itradermal low dose versus intramuscular high dose vaccines in hemodialysis patients’ short- and long-time follow-up.
Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 24 hemodialysis patients not responded to conventional method of vaccination, were enrolled to intramuscular or intradermal groups randomly. The antibody titer was checked after 1 and 3 months of the end of vaccination. In 16 remaining patients, antibody titer was rechecked also after 14 and 20 months.
Findings: In studied patients, the mean HBS antibody titer was 4.4 ± 3.1 mu/ml at the beginning of study; and 190.4 ± 59 and 223.3 ± 83.9 mu/ml after 1 and 3 months follow-up, respectively
(P < 0.001). In remaining patients, the mean antibody titer after 14 and 20 months follow-up was
144 ± 164.2 and 45.2 ± 34 mu/ml, respectively (P < 0.001).
Conclusion: Response to vaccination at short time in two groups was very good but after 14 months, the antibody titer decreased and the decline of antibody titer continued until 20 months.
