description In the article an attempt is made to define a possible composition of canons, upon which the popes of Rome Felix III (483-492) and Gelasius (492-496) relied condemning the Patriarch of Constantinople Acacius, that lead to a long schism be-tween Rome and the Churches of the East (484-519). According to pope Gelasius the Roman position was based upon canonical ground, but he didn’t name exact canons. The author of the article defines an approximate composition of the canonical and civil law, from which the popes could theoretically draw their right to in-tervene and to judge other tenants of archiepiscopal chairs. The author comes to the conclusion that the papal position was in essence utterly uncanonical.
