description This work analyses racism in one episode of the novel Fruit of the Lemon by Andrea Levy. It shows how watching a black woman being attacked in the multicultural London in 1980s, makes the black protagonist of the novel, Faith, aware of the existence of racism in that society. This research analyses the strategies that make black citizens objects, due to the colour of their skin, in the social context where the protagonist lives. The methodology of investigation is based on the theories of race, racism, othering, identitity and hybridity developed by Ashcroft, Bhabha, Fanon, Hall and others, according to which we analyze the way the dichotomy black and white affects the protagonists subjectivity. The results show that, under a false sense of tolerance, racism is represented in fictional events in the Black British Literature.
