description | This paper reviews Ramón J. Cárcano’s work on the origins of the Paraguay War in the context of the historiographical debate. This war has been the center of significant research as well as ideological and political controversies. It has also provoked intense national discourses in the countries involved. Therefore there is a renewed interest in the subject matter. Cárcano’s book Guerra del Paraguay. Orígenes y causas (I only consider the first volume, dedicated to the causes and origins of the war, and not the following ones, which are more descriptive of the war itself) is studied as a continuation of the pivotal theme of his historiographical work: the formation of the Argentinean nation-state, in the period that spans between the battles of Caseros and Pavón. In Carcano’s view, the Paraguay War is entangled with the issues of the national organization of Argentina and the factions and internal strife that emerged on both sides of the Río de la Plata. By using a long-term historical perspective, the author identifies the origins of the war in the context of the dispute between Portugal and Spain and their competition in achieving discoveries and conquests in the New World since Christopher Columbus’ expedition up to the processes of Independence. He also analyzes the short-term causes of the war and the political juncture that led to it. |
