| description | Medicine by post, quite a common practice in the XVIIIth century, has left archives of a priceless value for the history of medicine and health, giving rise to a rich historiography since the 1990s. On the basis of the corpus of correspondence of the Swiss doctor Samuel Auguste Tissot (1728-1797) and the file of one of his patients, this article describes the practice of the epistolary consultation and the interest of such sources to inform the experience of disease from the patients’ point of view. It highlights the ways in which the illness narrative is shaped on the story of life, how medical culture was appropriated by laymen and their expectations towards doctors or treatments, all of which are revealing aspects of the history of the body and the therapeutic relation in the Age of Enlightenment. |
