description The paper presents two articles dealing with researches on users’ perception of libraries, the first with a quantitative approach, the latter with a qualitative approach: "Use and Awareness of Electronic Information Sources at IIT Roorkee, India: A Case Study", and "L'identità percepita: applicare la grounded theory in biblioteca". The authors underline the importance of sharing theories and practices on user surveys in order to gain skills of research methods and to widen research horizons. In Library Science, in fact, the habit is to use only quantitative methods of social research while carrying on customer satisfaction surveys, favouring the questionnaire instead of the interview or the focus group. The contents of the two articles are described, highlighting the main aspects: the quantitative survey on electronic resources within the Indian library shows the need to think on different informative needs, while the qualitative survey on the perception of public libraries is focused on the Grounded Theory, an effective approach to explore personal representations and understand a complex phenomenon.
