description | Foodborne functional component intervention (such as prebiotic, probiotics, edible homologous medicinal materials, etc.) play important roles in the improvement of the human health, including the skin health. Even so, the mechanism of foodborne functional component intervention in the improvement of skin health remains elusive. The cutaneous microbial barrier is human’s outermost barrier and play a vital role in maintaining homeostasis of the internal environment and resisting invasive microorganisms from the external environment. The gut microbiota also acts as a barrier between the intestinal external environment and internal environment (including the skin). The crosstalk between the cutaneous barriers (the physical, chemistry, immune barrier, and microbial barriers) can cooperate to serve as a protective function in skin ecosystem homeostasis. Besides, the cutaneous local neuro-endocrine-immune system also plays a crucial regulatory and protective role in the skin ecosystem. This review summarized vital roles of microbiota-targeted foodborne functional component intervention in the modulation of skin health from the perspective of food and skin barriers. |
