Summary: | While by no means an exhaustive account, this article discusses the influence of Africa on the economy of Salvador, Brazil’s third most populous city and the largest concentration of people of African origin outside the continent. This paper details the findings of fieldwork that examined how religious cults such as Candomblé have become vehicles for folklore-inspired economic activity. It hopes to present an approach that results in a deeper economic and anthropological understanding of these phenomena. |
