description | The deceased in the Derveni tombs, near Thessaloniki, Macedonia were members of an élite family of Thessalian origin, which probably lived in the nearby ancient city Lete in the 4th century BC. The richest grave B contained the cremated remains of a man who died when he was approximately 35-50 years old. Among the numerous grave goods was a bronze tripartite lidded case, preserving its content. Scientific investigation of the content showed that it is of medical nature and similar to the content of two miniature copper bowls. These results instigated the re-interpretation of other grave-goods, which were obviously associated with medical practice: a miniature bronze pyxis which still contains hematite, two bronze spatulas, bronze tube and possible the numerous stone alabastra. The study of these finds complements earlier studies to bring out the identity of the deceased who was a man of high social status, a warrior entrusted with cultic duties, and at the same time a learned physician. |
