Summary: | Communion and Liberation (CL) is widely known in Italy as a very important Catholic movement whose political power has significantly increased in the last fifteen years. It has a strong identity, which combines both traditionalism and modernity, and has managed to expand both its adherents and its presence in the social, economic, and political realms. It is thus an example of a successful religious movement in the contemporary political landscape. This paper focuses on the relationships between CL and Italian politics in the Second Republic (from 1993 to the present), by analyzing CL’s representation of its political role and the political opportunity structure that enabled its success. |
