Description
Summary:The surfaces of parts manufactured from steels and other alloys are subjected to higher stresses, greater abrasive forces and more direct environmental exposure than are the part interiors. When aggressive forces reach the limits of a material’s resistance, surface initiated fracture, fatigue, wear and corrosion occur. For these reasons, surface modification and enhancement have long been applied to steels. Ion (plasma) nitriding is one of the most widely used advanced surface modification techniques applied to steels. It has been used in the fabrication of components for the automobile industry, metallurgical industry and tool manufacturing. The purpose of this paper is to briefly review the plasma nitriding which is now being applied to steels. In particular, the benefits, limitations and processing principles are described.
