description The article reviews the use of cardiac glycosides in patients with chronic heart failure, paroxysmal tachyarrhythmia and chronic atrial fibrillation (rate control). According to the recent studies results cardiac glycosides may be substituted by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor antagonists, diuretics, calcium antagonists and beta-adrenoceptor blockers in order to decrease the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity and, in some cases, to improve quality of life and prognosis of the patients.
