Description
Summary:Based on surveys conducted during my Ph.D. in geography on the Tamil diaspora, this article proposes, first, to explore the relationship between tourism and diaspora, and, secondly, to determine how diasporic tourism is a condition for the realization of the diasporic experience. This implies in a first move to define the space of diaspora, i.e. not as an “other” place with a certain degree of otherness, but rather as a form of heterotopia. In a second move, I assume that diasporic tourism is a necessary condition, for these “transmigrants”, to achieve their diasporic experience. In other words, tourism is diasporic because it participates in the diaspora, and because it helps to organize the diasporic space in a new way. Thus it develops people’s know-how to belong to a “here” and to be from “elsewhere”.
