| description | This study presents a history of Islamic education during the Langkat sultanate (1912-1946), focusing on Jam‘iyah Mahmudiyah li Thalibil Khairiyah as the most significant education institution of the time. The analyses include institutional developments, the curriculum, teachers and students, as well as management. The author concludes that Jam‘iyah Mahmudiyah li Thalibil Khairiyah was the first modern Islamic education institution in North Sumatra, in the sense that it has specifically written vision, mission, and objectives, well organized management, modern infrastructures and transparent budgeting. The institution also employed modern teaching methods. Apparently, the development of the institution owes almost everything to Langkat Sultanate as its fate follows suit the fate of the sultanate. |
