description Mucormycosis is a rare, life-threatening opportunistic infection caused by Mucorales. The most common organisms that cause mucormycosis in humans are Rhizopus, Mucor, Rhizomucor, Lichtheimia (Absidia), and Cunninghamella. Risk factors for the disease include diabetes mellitus, metabolic acidosis, hematologic malignancies, prolonged severe neutropenia, use of corticosteroids, and human immunodeficiency virus infection. Diagnosis and treatment of infection are difficult.
