Alexandr Kuprin has visited France twice, first in 1912 during his several-months travel around Europe, second time however was a totally different. Since 1920 until 1937, he was living in Paris as an immigrant. Kuprin’s attitude towards France was ambivalent. The prose writer, despite appreciation for the foreign country’s positive aspects – rich culture, interesting people and excellent cuisine – was experiencing negative perception of the new environment, merely because it was not his beloved motherland. In Kuprin’s output of his immigration period it is noticeable to see attempts of assimilation into new reality throughout searching for comparisons between French and Russian reality creating characteristic map of smells, sounds, colors and textures, which in his opinion, perfectly describe France or change of attitude towards French. Despite that, he was experiencing feeling of alienation, which seemed to be inseparable element of his emigrational existence. Moreover he is unable to get rid of tendency to confront French customs and scenery with idealized vision of his motherland. |
