From apathy to outrage. Narratives of Spanish independent rock in times of crisis

| Summary: | <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 8.0pt; font-family: 'Segoe UI Symbol',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Segoe UI Symbol\,Segoe UI Symbol'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Segoe UI Symbol\,Segoe UI Symbol'; color: #424244;">This article presents an analysis of the current independent scene in Spain, in a moment of transformation and controversy. In a musical world usually not interested in political issues, it seems that have change under the 15-M influence. In the last years several albums with remarkable political content (Vetusta Morla, Nacho Vegas) have been published. This politicization contrasts sharply with a feral criticism on the genre, that have been acussed repeatly of being elitist. The hispter label, associated with an immersion into the world of cultural consumerism to avoid being aware of the precarious living conditions of cultural workers, repeatedly has been associeted to this genre. Even this process of politicization is seen from certain positions as a new imposture, an attempt to keep abreast of the times, because politics seems to be fashionable. This article discusses these controversies, using an interdisciplinary metodological approach that blends the semiotic analysis of music videos and lyrics, and documentation work on press articles. The article includes also a genealogy of the politicization of Spanish indie and their connections with past and recent political attitudes, cultivated from other musical genres.</span></p> |
