| description | State/market relations require a holistic vision of the relationships between the material and relational dynamics of society, on the one hand, and between these dynamics and institutional dynamics, on the other. As the state is the institution‑of‑institutions, it contains mechanisms that are essential for the existence of the markets themselves, and these mechanisms are not a “given”. It is therefore erroneous to consider the state, the market and society as opposing entities. The institutionalist perspective anchored in the work of Polanyi, which proposes a political approach to state and market, is apt in this respect. Economies are, in fact, institutional production systems in which the material weight of the state as organisation and administration is important. The institutionalist perspective therefore needs to be refined in order to demonstrate that the state is not merely a political and legal entity, and this constitutes one of the main aims of this text. |
