Experimental Investigation on the Mechanical and Moisture Absorption Behavior of Indian Almond – Veli Karuvelam Hybrid Composites

In this study, Indian almond – Veli Karuvelam hybrid composites were fabricated by hand layup method and the mechanical & moisture absorption behaviors were studied. Totally, five composites were fabricated viz. I:V(1:0), I:V(0:1), I:V(3:1), I:V(1:1) & I:V(1:3). Tensile, flexural, impact &am...

description In this study, Indian almond – Veli Karuvelam hybrid composites were fabricated by hand layup method and the mechanical & moisture absorption behaviors were studied. Totally, five composites were fabricated viz. I:V(1:0), I:V(0:1), I:V(3:1), I:V(1:1) & I:V(1:3). Tensile, flexural, impact & moisture absorption studies were carried out. Performance of all the composites was compared with each other. Experimental results showed that the I:V(0:1) exhibited the maximum tensile & flexural strength of 65 MPa & 240 MPa, respectively, due to the packing of more amount of high strength & high stiffness Veli Karuvelm fibers. Impact study showed that the I:V(0:1) composite displayed the maximum impact strength of 6.7 kJ/m2 owing to the optimum bonding strength among the fibers and resin. Further, the moisture absorption study resulted that the I:V(1:0) composite showed the higher moisture absorption of 55% at 14 days compared to other composites because of the greater water intake capacity of the Indian almond fibers. It is concluded from this study that the I:V(0:1) composite could be used in structural applications as exhibited better mechanical properties.
