Summary:The siege of silence laid by the “Estado Novo” (1937-1945) to practices and discourses that could deviate from established rules led many people to believe, for a long time, in the triumph of a supposed “national unanimity chorus”. Contradicting this standpoint, which extends its reach to the popular music domain, this paper searches to lift part of the curtain that conceals manifestations out of the “contented chorus” tune during this regime in Brazil.
