description The purpose of the article is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the fonds of scientific libraries in Lviv (the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv, Lviv State Regional Universal Scientific Library, Scientific Library of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv) regarding the presence of informal Ukrainian newspapers in them of the late 80’s and early 90’s of the 20th century. Methodology research is based on the general scientific principles of objectivity, systematicity, causality and historicism. Among concrete scientific methods applied: historical and descriptive, analytical, problem-thematic, structural and typological. Quantitative and qualitative analysis was also used when processing the obtained results of the research. The scientific novelty of the research results lies in the fact that, for the first time in the history of Ukrainian press studies, an array of informal Ukrainian newspapers of the late 80s and early 90s of the 20th century, which today are kept in the leading scientific library institutions of Lviv, has been analyzed. Systematization of informal publications was carried out according to the thematic principle. The following groups of newspapers are distinguished: 1) political; 2) cultural and educational, literary and artistic; 3) general; 4) professional; 5) specialized (monothematic) publications. The defined groups are mainly divided into subgroups. It has been found that informal newspapers of a political nature predominate. Conclusions. The scientific disclosure and processing of the scientific libraries’ fonds will provide an opportunity for modern researchers to create an objective and reliable picture of the past, to deepen the scientific study of the problems of the national historical heritage, the repertoire of domestic periodicals. In the future, it is planned to expand the boundaries of the study of this issue, since the informal press is stored not only in the fonds of scientific libraries, but also in archives, museums and another institutions of Lviv. The promulgation and research of materials from private collections is also important.
