description In 1907-08, French commissioned naval officer Benjamin Ullmo (1882-1957) got indicted, and convicted, of treason. Unlike in the Dreyfus Affair, there had never been any doubt whatever about his guilt. Neither did he have the « excuse » of ideological sympathy or having been submitted to blackmail. Ullmo betrayed only because he needed money. And that was that. He got harshly punished, receiving the maximal sentence set out by the law of his time: lifelong transportation to French Guyana. Set free after serving 15 years of his sentence for good behavior, he decided to stay there and managed to make a new life as a commercial clerk; and as a religious prophet.
