description | Neurodegenerative diseases are one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Currently available therapeutic agents provide symptomatic relief to a great level. Still, there is a need for some more potential leads to overcome the progression of neurodegeneration. Pyrimidine scaffold has gained substantial attention for the management of neurodegeneration due to its prominent role in the brain by improving cognitive functions. Recently, pyrimidine-containing compounds have been successfully developed as potent inhibitors of several biological targets involved in different neurodegenerative diseases. This present review provides insight into the beneficiary role of pyrimidine against these diseases with a particular focus on alzheimer's disease, parkinson's disease, huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, diabetic neuropathy, and multiple sclerosis. These findings may aid researchers in the design of more bio-target-specific anti-neurodegenerative agents. |
