description Today, the air quality in the urban region is detrimantally polluted to a significant degree by the exhaust gas emissions from the engine vehicles. Consequently, all effects of any planned traffic project have to be accurately calculated and evaluated regarding their environmental impact. Subject of this investigation was to study different road routing alternatives, each of them covering some long tunnel sections in a highly structured, hilly area of a small valley in the Black Forest, Germany. During this study numerical calculations of air transport and pollution were made for different meteorological and traffic conditions. The object of these calculations was two-fold: First, to obtain evidence that the standardized values and limits officially introduced by the ECC and German regulations for the immission control can be guaranteed. Second, to ensure that planned variants will be viable and feasable from the air-hygienic point of view.
