description In the banqueting hall where the drinking party takes place, the lyre and the aulos are associated with the crater and the gestures that make it function. The lyre’s hollow body, with its arms and strings, and the vase of the mixture appear at once as the place and instrument of a krâsis similar to the one that produces the wine drunk by the men at the symposion and the music they listen to. Both ensure, on the same mode, the conviviality and concord between the drinkers. This close kinship between the mixtures of wine and music also finds a noteworthy echo in the Delphian adyton where it becomes incarnate in the Pythia. From the symposion to the adyton, krâsis prevails, presiding at the same time over the harmony of the lyre, the right use of the wine and the Pythia’s responsiveness to Apollo.
