description | Pneuma and nous in Reformed hymns: A perspective from 1 Corinthians 14:15 and the tradition, with specific reference to music and poetry
Scripture does not supply us with particular prescriptions regarding worship singing. Certain broad principles can, however, be distinguished. In 1 Corinthians 14:15 the church is called upon to sing with both spirit and mind. Through the ages it has become clear that music and poetry have a profound effect on the spirit as well as on the mind of man. In a time of continued renewal and change it is imperative for the church to fully utilize this combined power of music and poetry in worship and to ensure that it continues to affect both spirit and mind in a positive way. |
