description We review the recent investigation of a new form of nonlocally nonlinear system with oscillatory responses. The system has various new features, such as the nonlocality-controllable transition of self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities, a unique modulational instability and new forms of solitons. We also discuss the propagation of the optical beam in a nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy and demonstrate theoretically that propagation can be modelled by the system.
